Our mind absorbs everything that goes on around us on a daily basis, whether it be positive or negative experiences. The problem is, our minds can only handle so much of the negative side of things before its health will begin to deteriorate. This is especially true when it comes to traumatic events or those that cause high amounts of anxiety or fear.

There can in fact be instances where a person can experience something so frightening that they develop a disorder called PTSD, or in technical terms Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

A perfect example of a person who would be likely to develop PTSD would be a soldier. We see soldiers come home from active duty and combat tours who have a hard time readjusting to their normal lives. This is due to the fact that they have spent months or even years in an environment full of stress and fear for their life. As stated before, our brain can only handle so much stress before it literally snaps.

Those who are suffering from PTSD or know someone who is, surely know the damaging effects it has on a person’s life. Between the nightmares and the cold sweats, a good night of sleep becomes nearly impossible. Social interaction also becomes very difficult for those who are suffer from PTSD. Those who may have had many friends at one time will likely begin to seclude themselves, it is just a matter of time. It is also not uncommon for those who suffer from PTSD to enter unstable emotional states and become suicidal.

Those who do not suffer from this disorder or know someone who is will likely never understand how severe it truly is. Just about the only good thing about PTSD is the fact that it is treatable. At times it may feel as if things will never get better and you may feel as if the dark cloud that is hovering overhead may never go away.

Do not worry, things can and will get better!

This friend, who I will leave unnamed for obvious privacy reasons, served in the military. During his tour he was exposed to many things that caused serious stress and anxiety. Over time, all of the effects of the war going on around him took a serious toll on his emotional state.

He was a completely different person upon returning home. The friend I once had was gone and at the time it seemed as if he would be gone forever. This realization broke my heart and it was something that I did not want to accept.

There were many years that went by that this friend lived in a depressive emotional state that slowly ate away at everything good in his life. Before long, there was nothing good left at all. It was at this point that my friend hit rock bottom.
