thIt seems as if the world is becoming more and more of a selfish place. Helping others used to be a natural part of life. It was not uncommon for people to raise their children to help others whenever possible, even if it meant giving someone the shirt off of their back. Sadly, it seems as if those days are coming to an end.

These days, most people are only worried about their needs. A lot of people would literally step on another person if they were in the way of them getting what they want.

The problem with this is the fact that it creates a very weak society. The evidence of this is in front of our faces on a daily basis. There are terrible stories on the news all the time about people harming each other over money and possessions. Then longer these types of acts take place in our society, the more broken and harder to repair it will become.

If I were to tell you that you have the power to begin change, would you believe me? As hard as it may be to believe, it is entirely true! While you may not have the power to change the entire world on your own, you do have the power to make a difference that can cause a chain reaction.

This can be accomplished through the gift of giving. By this I do not necessarily mean to start handing money out to random people as most people would not be able to afford this. Giving back can involve anything from volunteering for charities to working with troubled kids. The possibilities really are endless.

Simple acts of kindness are contagious, you can think of them as yawns. One person in the room does it and sooner or later, everyone does it. This is what enables you as one person to make a difference in such as large world.

One of the best parts of giving back is the fact that it also helps you to get ahead. Being kind to others and giving back to society tends to mold people into more optimistic and caring people. There are even many people who will say that helping others becomes somewhat of an addiction due to the thrill and pleasure they get from giving back to others.

This actually brings a past experience to mind. A couple years ago someone I know volunteered for the Special Olympics. His assignment was to aid in the bocce ball games. He was a little nervous at first because he did not know what to expect and did not know much about bocce ball either. However, his nervousness was quickly turned into joy and the gift of bliss that can only be obtained from helping others.

He said that there was the most positive vibe in the air that he had ever felt. Nobody was upset that they were there, it was the complete opposite. Everyone had the time of their life, especially the children who were participating in the Special Olympics.

This simple act of giving back, though it may not seem like that big of a deal, almost certainly helped better someone’s life as well as my friends.

The tricky thing about giving back is the fact that you will not see immediate results in most cases. For example, you could help a troubled kid see life in a new way but that does not mean that all of the other troubled kids will suddenly figure things out. However, the one kid that you did help might go and try to help his friends now with the lessons that you taught them. This is where the chain reaction occurs that was mentioned earlier.

Even though you may not see immediate results from giving back, trust me you are making a difference in the world! There are times that you may see immediate results from giving back as well. For example, buy some food and take it to a family that you know may not have dinner to eat tonight, you won’t have to look to far because there are needy families everywhere. The appreciation you receive from these people will be one of the best things you have ever felt in your life.

We need to start shifting society back to a point where we all look out for each other. We should see all of humanity as one big herd instead of creating several different packs. We have the power within each of us to change the world into a better place.

Some of the happiest and most successful people in the world are those who have the same mentality. Look at Bill Gates, the guy has boat loads of money, but he also donates a large portion of it to multiple charities.

Begin creating a better world as well as a better life. Start giving back today so that you can start doing your part to change the world!
